Why Am I Here?

Is there a purpose for my life? Am I here for a reason? Does what I say or do even matter? What is the point of this life? These thoughts and questions are as old as time, thankfully, God has provided answers from the greatest book on earth…the Bible.

You are Here to Please God

The Bible says people were created by God, and for him. Adam and Eve were the first people created, and God’s relationship with them brought him great pleasure. God’s purpose for us has not changed, he desires for us to please him by cultivating a relationship with him. To live our lives for our pleasure goes against God’s plan. We are not here for ourselves, we are here for him.

“For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:”
~ Colossians 1:16

It is gracious of God to allow us to enjoy His creation. Delicious food, relationships and the like are things we enjoy. Because of this most people live as though personal pleasure is the meaning of life. Like a wrist watch, however, we were designed for a particular use. If you used your watch as a hammer, it would be useless to complain to the manufacturer after it was broken. The manufacturer would say, “It is broken because it was not used for its intended purpose”. To live our life for our own pleasure is to go against God’s intended purpose. To go against that purpose would be selfish. In the end it will leave us broken and useless.

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”
~ Revelation 4:11

How Can You Please God?

It has been previously stated that a personal and individual relationship with God is what brings him the most pleasure. However, some have decided to replace that relationship with good works, but the Bible says…

Not of works, lest any man should boast.” ~ Ephesians 2:9

Others have tried to live a righteous or clean life, but again the Bible says…

“But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.” ~ Isaiah 64:6

“As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:” ~ Romans 3:10

“How can that be?” you may ask. “Why would a clean lifestyle and good works be unacceptable to God?” Fortunately, the Bible again provides an answer.

Faith Is Necessary to Please God

“But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” ~ Hebrews 11:6

We are here on this earth to please God and it is impossible to do so without faith, but what are we suppose to have faith in? We have already seen that faith cannot be in our good works or our own righteousness. Can we pick and choose what to place faith in? Can we make up our own religion or belief system? Is it good enough to have faith regardless of what that faith is in? Again, the Bible provides an answer, faith is to be in Jesus Christ.

“Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.” ~ Galatians 2:16

“Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:” ~ Romans 5:1

Without Faith in Christ You Are God’s Enemy

There are those who will ask, “What does faith in Jesus Christ have to do with pleasing God?” That question and its answer are extremely important. The answer is that right now, without putting your faith in Jesus Christ, you are the enemy of God! God’s desire is to have an individual relationship with us, but he is holy, and sin makes a relationship with him impossible. Sin makes us the opposite of God’s friend, it makes us his enemy. In your mind you may argue with that statement; while you may admit that God is not a large part of your life, you do not consider yourself to be his enemy. However, the Bible makes it clear that because of sin, God is against us:

“For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers: but the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.”~ I Peter 3:12

“But we are sure that the judgment of God is according to truth against them which commit such things.” ~ Romans 2:2

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;”~ Romans 1:18

Some say that they have not sinned but the Bible reveals otherwise:

“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;” ~ Romans 3:23

Others, while admitting they have sinned, believe their sin is not that bad and that they are an overall good person. But the Bible says that if we have committed even one sin we are guilty of committing them all.

“For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.” ~ James 2:10

Your Sin Must Be Punished

Because we sinned and became enemies of God, it is impossible for us to fulfill our purpose in life of pleasing him. Not only that, it is necessary for God to administer punishment for the sin we have indulged in.

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.” ~ Revelation 21:8

But God Has Provided a Way

God, because of his great love, has provided a way for us to have that relationship with him that he so greatly desires.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”

~ John 3:16

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” ~ Romans 5:8

The Bible says that God came down to earth and took on the form of a man (Jesus Christ) to live a sinless life for the purpose of being the payment for our sin. God (Jesus) received our punishment for us so that we could be at peace with him and enter into a relationship with him that would bring him so much pleasure.

“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.” ~ I Timothy 1:15

“For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death inthe flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:” ~ I Peter 3:18

To make it possible for God to forgive us, Jesus took our sins upon himself and received the wrath of God in our place. While Jesus was being beaten, crucified and killed on a cross, his perfect, sinless blood was shed. It was that blood that appeased the wrath of God and enabled us to be reconciled to him.

“For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.”

~ Romans 5:10

“For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” ~ II Corinthians 5:21

“For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.” ~ Romans 5:6

“To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.” ~ II Corinthiains 5:19

“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.” ~ Ephesians 2:13

So, you see, you will never be truly fulfilled until you have faith in Jesus Christ as payment for your sin. The question, “Why Am I Here?”, has been answered. We are here to please God by having a close relationship with him. That relationship will never be possible until your faith is in Jesus. Until you put your faith and trust in Jesus Christ, the wrath of God will abide upon you. Billionaires, movie stars and successful people of all kinds have one thing in common. When they have reached the top they are still not satisfied! Regardless of its significance, no accomplishment in this life will ever satisfy because you will be going against your original purpose, which is to please God.

Will you please God today by putting faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ? He has already paid the debt for your sin and rose from the dead proving he was God. When you believe and trust in Him by faith, it will be possible for you to experience real purpose for living!
